"Your dock fan has failed" - Dell BIOS Notification

"Your dock fan has failed. You may experience reduced performance until your dock is serviced."

We've seen reports of this notification popping up when users first turn on their computers. The tricky thing about this notification is it is likely a false positive. If you've experienced this and see a screen similar to the screenshot below, continue on with the troubleshooting steps.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Acknowledge this window by taking a picture of the screen. Next, open a Helpdesk IT ticket by emailing helpdesk@fmgsuite.com - making sure to include the screenshot. Please also include a photo of the bottom of the dock as well, as this will tell us the exact model. If it is an older model, a replacement dock will likely need to be issued.
  2. Click 'Continue' to boot up the computer like normal.
  3. Listen to your dock - You should be able to clearly tell if the fans are spinning on it or not. If:
    1. Fans are spinning - This is likely a false positive or a limited-power type issue. You can provide additional power to your laptop by plugging in the power adapter (laptop charger) to the laptop while leaving the dock plugged in like normal. This should provide extra power to the laptop and prevent this issue from coming back.
    2. Fans are not spinning - Your dock fan isn't working and likely needs to be replaced. Please tell the Helpdesk about this detail when opening up a ticket and provide your mailing address so IT can send you a new one quickly. Until it arrives, you can help your dock work better by using your laptop charger at the same time.
  4. Continue to work as normal - Whether you're waiting for a replacement or not, this issue won't stop your dock from functioning and you should be able to continue work as normal. If additional problems are presenting themselves, be sure to include this in detail on your Helpdesk ticket so we can provide further support.
